Tourist tax: the right reflexes
What is it?
In many cities, a small local tax is added to the price of your accommodation. It depends on the city, the type of accommodation and sometimes the season.
It is not always included
Depending on the accommodation, it is included in the displayed price or paid on site on arrival. Read the price breakdown before booking.
Compare the total price
Between two hotels, the tax can change the ranking. Always look at the final amount, taxes included.
Ask the accommodation
If in doubt, write to the hotel before you arrive to find out what is left to pay on site, and how (cash or card).
Children and long stays
Some cities exempt children or cap the tax at a number of nights. Check with the accommodation or the tourist office.
Other charges exist
A few destinations also ask for an entry fee or a tourist levy on arrival. Check the official website of the city or country before you go.
Our advice
Keep a small margin in your budget for local taxes, and always check up-to-date amounts with the accommodation or official websites.
