A solo break: 8 destinations to recharge

Choosing well when travelling alone

Easy transport, a welcoming atmosphere and ways to recharge: here are the destinations travel specialists recommend most for travelling alone, and what you can enjoy there at your own pace.

Japan: serenity at every step

Fast trains between Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka, the Philosopher's Path in Kyoto, a night in a ryokan with a hot bath, and ramen counters where eating alone feels natural. For a real break, a night in a temple on Mount Koya.

Iceland: nature to clear your head

The Golden Circle and its waterfalls, hot springs around Reykjavik, a road trip on the Ring Road and, from September to April, the Northern Lights. Guided tours let you see it all without organising a thing.

Lisbon: easy living and light

The lanes of Alfama, the viewpoints (miradouros) at sunset, an evening of fado, a guided walking tour to meet other travellers, and a day among the colourful palaces of Sintra.

Bali: yoga and recharging

Yoga classes and retreats around Ubud, walks through the rice fields, first surf lessons in Canggu and cafés to unwind, then sunset over the cliffs of Uluwatu.

Thailand: flavours and serenity

The temples of Chiang Mai and Doi Suthep overlooking the city, a Thai cooking class, a traditional massage, then the southern islands, such as Koh Tao to learn to dive.

New Zealand: wide open spaces

The Tongariro Alpine Crossing, one of the finest day hikes, the geothermal springs and Maori culture of Rotorua, the Hobbiton set, and the thrill activities of Queenstown.

Costa Rica: life in nature

National parks to explore with a naturalist guide, a night in an eco-lodge deep in the forest, and yoga facing the Pacific on the Nosara coast.

Seoul: a city where being alone feels good

Royal palaces such as Gyeongbokgung, the traditional Bukchon village, Gwangjang market for street food, and a simple, efficient metro. Eating alone, called honbap, is a real habit there.

Our advice

Book a guided activity now and then to meet people, and keep moments just for yourself. Choose well-located accommodation near transport, and share your itinerary with someone close.
