When to go
November to April, in the dry season. Hurricane season runs from June to November, and sargassum seaweed can reach the beaches in some years, mainly from spring to late summer.

Downtown: more Mexican and cheaper, handy for smaller budgets.
Playa del Carmen
One hour south: a laid-back beach town with the pedestrian Fifth Avenue.
Tulum
Two hours south: Mayan ruins by the sea and boutique hotels in the jungle.
